New Zealand Critical Purpose Visitor Visa processing time

There is no honest current universal processing time for a new Critical Purpose Visitor Visa application. Immigration New Zealand says the border-exception regime that produced these visas was created for COVID-19 restrictions and phased out as the border reopened in 2022.

What the Critical Purpose Visitor Visa was

INZ’s official July 2022 announcement says the border-exception regime and Critical Purpose Visitor Visas were created in response to border restrictions introduced in 2020. The historical instructions describe a two-step path: a person or supporting organization first expressed interest in travelling, and INZ could then invite the person to apply for a visa or variation of conditions if the critical-purpose requirements appeared likely to be met.

Those instructions are now archived. They are useful for understanding an old application or visa, but they are not a current invitation to apply.

When the border-exception route closed

INZ announced that all main border-exception categories and class exceptions would close on July 31, 2022. Primary-sector class exceptions were scheduled to close on September 1, 2022, with limited transitional arrangements for seafood-processing workers and deep-sea fishers. The announcement said requests received before the applicable deadline would continue to be considered and, if approved, a person could still be invited to apply.

That distinction matters: the deadline closed new border-exception requests, but it did not mean every request or invited visa application already in progress received a decision on the same day. INZ did not publish one current universal completion time for all of those historical cases.

How to check an older application

  1. Use the INZ account tied to the application. INZ says the account can show whether more information is needed and whatever progress information is available.
  2. Watch the original contact channels. INZ may phone, email or post an account notification when it needs supporting information.
  3. Use INZ’s official contact route when appropriate. Its current status guidance says applicants can contact INZ when an application is taking longer than the normal timeframe for that visa.

GovWait cannot see a private application, determine whether an old invitation remains usable, or infer a queue position. Do not post an application number, passport details or other personal information here.

Do not confuse it with current visa names

The current Specific Purpose Work Visa processing time belongs to a separate route for qualifying work tied to a specific purpose or event. The current New Zealand Visitor Visa processing time also belongs to a different route. Neither set of figures retroactively describes the COVID-era Critical Purpose Visitor Visa.

INZ’s phase-out announcement also referred workers to the then-new Accredited Employer Work Visa as the border reopened. That historical transition is not a promise that an AEWV—or any other current visa—is suitable for a particular person today. Current eligibility must be checked with INZ or a licensed adviser.

Common questions

Can I submit a new Critical Purpose Visitor Visa application?

The general COVID border-exception pathway is no longer open. INZ’s official announcement closed the main exception requests in July 2022 and the primary-sector exceptions in September 2022, subject to the limited transitions described above.

How long did a Critical Purpose Visitor Visa take?

There is no single current official number GovWait can responsibly publish. Timing depended on the historical exception category, the expression-of-interest and invitation steps, the visa application, and the facts of the case.

Is a Specific Purpose Work Visa the same visa?

No. It is a current work route with its own purpose-or-event requirements. Similar wording does not make the categories or their processing times interchangeable.
