GovWait Official government processing times, with source status

New Zealand student visa processing times

Immigration New Zealand currently reports separate processing-time distributions for Fee Paying and Pathway Student Visas. Both reviewed routes currently show 50% within 23 working days and 80% within 53 working days, but GovWait keeps their histories separate because they are different visa categories.

The matching values are a current coincidence, not permission to merge the routes. Each official visa has its own eligibility rules and keeps its own append-only GovWait history.

Why the 80% figure is important for study planning

The 50% point describes the middle of the represented applications; it does not describe the slower half. The 80% point reaches farther into that distribution, while still leaving one in five represented applications beyond it. A student planning around only the first number discards that uncertainty.

Working days are not calendar days

INZ excludes Saturdays, Sundays and New Zealand public holidays from its working-day measure. GovWait preserves the published working-day counts rather than converting them to a calendar date that could be wrong for the submission date and holiday period.

Keep three planning periods separate

  1. Before application: admission, tuition or funding evidence, supporting documents and any other official prerequisites take their own time.
  2. Visa processing: the current INZ distribution is 23 working days at 50% and 53 working days at 80%.
  3. After decision: travel, accommodation, course-start and other arrangements remain separate.

The official visa page—not this guide—defines the current eligibility and document requirements.

What can extend an application

INZ explains that incomplete or complex applications, requests for information, verification and demand can increase the wait. A complete file may sit closer to the average, but the published figures do not guarantee that result.

Course dates and visa dates are not interchangeable. Use the school’s instructions and INZ’s official guidance, and avoid treating the 50% point as a safe latest-submission date.

History and wider comparison

The Fee Paying Student Visa page and Pathway Student Visa page keep their 50% and 80% values as separate append-only series. The New Zealand report compares their gap with other reviewed visas and will identify later verified changes.

Common questions

Can 23 working days be converted to an exact decision date?

No. It is a distribution point in working days and half of represented applications took longer.

Does the 80% figure cover every application?

No. By definition, the remaining 20% are outside that completion point.
