UK Standard Visitor visa processing time
The current UKVI table lists 3 weeks for a Standard Visitor application made outside the UK. It separately lists 8 weeks for the inside-UK context, so the two should not be quoted as one universal wait.
What starts the visitor-visa clock
UKVI says processing begins after identity is verified and the documents and application are submitted through the ID Check app, or after the applicant attends the visa application centre for fingerprints and a photograph. The clock ends when UKVI sends the letter or email stating that a decision has been made.
What “3 weeks” does not include
It does not include the applicant’s preparation before the processing start, the time needed to obtain an appointment beforehand, or every post-decision travel step. UKVI also says applicants are not required to book travel before applying or before a decision is made.
The official processing times use the UK working week, Monday to Friday. UK public holidays are included in the published calculation, while public holidays in other countries are not.
Outside and inside contexts
| Published context | Current time | Route page |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Visitor — outside UK | 3 weeks | Current value & history |
| Standard Visitor — inside-UK table | 8 weeks | Current value & history |
The table reports what UKVI publishes; it does not say that every visitor can or should apply from either context.
When a decision can take longer
UKVI lists inaccurate information, further evidence, document verification, interviews, personal-circumstance checks, higher demand and technical outages as examples. It says applicants will be contacted within the current processing time if the application will take longer.
Monitor the source date
GovWait stores each distinct UKVI update date in append-only history, whether the later published value changes or stays the same. The UK baseline and changes report shows the current distribution across all categories.
